The secretary general of Podemos published 683 tweets on Israel and Palestine — and zero on the Rohingya, the Uyghurs, the Chibok schoolgirls, or the political prisoners of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. We analyzed her 11,299 tweets over fifteen years.
Ione Belarra has been secretary general of Podemos since 2021 and was Minister of Social Rights from 2021 to 2023. Her Twitter account, opened in July 2011, accumulates 11,299 original tweets. We cross-referenced the complete archive against the seventeen major humanitarian crises of the period. The result: 683 tweets on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict — 91% of her output on international crises — versus 71 for the other sixteen combined.

In September 2022, Mahsa Amini died after being arrested by Iran's morality police. The revolt that followed — "Woman, Life, Freedom" — mobilized millions of Iranians and left more than 500 dead. Belarra, secretary general of a party that calls itself feminist, did not publish a single tweet on this revolt. Not on Amini's murder. Not on the executions that followed. Her colleague Irene Montero published at least two tweets. She published zero.
And when the Iranian regime massacred its opponents again in January 2026 — thousands of dead according to the UN Special Rapporteur — her first Iranian tweet of 2026 arrived on February 28, the day the United States and Israel attacked: since then, everything is about the war, the Rota base and NATO. The protesters massacred by the regime: zero mentions.
On 7 October 2023, Hamas murdered 1,200 people and took 251 hostages. Belarra reacted the same day — on EU foreign policy. On 8 October, she tweeted about Gaza. The word "Hamas" appears three times in fifteen years in her account: never to condemn it. The hostages: absent. The sexual violence documented by the UN: never mentioned by the Minister of Social Rights.
On 11 July 2021, hundreds of thousands of Cubans took to the streets — the largest mobilization in sixty years. More than a thousand people were arrested. Belarra: zero tweets. Venezuela, with its 7.7 million refugees and UN reports on crimes against humanity: zero tweets condemning the repression. Nicaragua, where Ortega had his opponents shot in 2018: zero tweets. Podemos's internationalist solidarity has a precise geography.
Belarra condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 — 52 tweets, unambiguous about the aggressor. She covered Yemen with more consistency than most of her Podemos colleagues (9 tweets). And her engagement on Israel/Palestine, however concentrated, includes a genuine concern for Palestinian civilians — documented, repeated, consistent.
Combining Belarra's archive with Irene Montero's, the two top Podemos leaders together produce 1,088 tweets on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and zero on the Rohingya, the Uyghurs, the Chibok schoolgirls or the political prisoners of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. This is not an individual peculiarity: it is the party's map.
The complete archive of @ionebelarra's original tweets and replies (11,299 publications, from 29 July 2011 to 6 July 2026) was downloaded via a public data API. Each crisis was identified using Spanish-language keyword dictionaries with word-boundary delimiters, manually verified to eliminate false positives. All counted tweets are available, with date and link, in the data annex.
