Jean-Luc Mélenchon on X: the arithmetic of selective outrage (2010–2026)

Founder of LFI, three-time presidential candidate. 42,012 tweets over sixteen years. 665 on Israel and Palestine, zero on Mahsa Amini in 2022 — and a January 2026 surprise this revision documents. The most nuanced count in the French series.

The widest periphery of the series

Mélenchon is the only one of the twelve profiles with nearly as many tweets on other crises (619) as on Israel/Palestine (665). His international distribution is genuinely wider: 278 on Ukraine, 168 on Syria, 101 on Mali/Sahel, 24 on Afghanistan. But the direction pattern — who is the villain depending on who dies — remains intact.

Iran: zero in 2022, five in 2026 — and the correction

On Mahsa Amini and the "Woman, Life, Freedom" revolt of 2022 — 500 dead, executions — zero tweets in 42,012. The Iran of Iranians does not exist in his account. But January 2026 imposes a correction this series owes its readers: faced with the uprising and the massacres of January 8–9 (thousands dead), Mélenchon reacted — genuinely: "Information arriving from Iran shows an organized massacre of opponents" (14 January, 3,570 likes), "neither the mullahs nor the Shah" (28 January). The documented limit: from the American-Israeli attack of 28 February, the frame shifts entirely to the war.

October 7 and the reserved vocabulary

Mélenchon has the word "terrorist" in his vocabulary — for Islamism, ETA, Al-Qaeda. His constant rule: Hamas never receives that label in his own voice. His 29 Hamas mentions are political analyses, historical contextualisations, never direct condemnations. The hostages: absent during the first months, then subordinated to the ceasefire frame.

Ukraine: condemnation with a permanent "but"

He condemned the invasion on 24 February 2022 — but already on 19 February had written that Ukraine's entry into NATO was Russia's "most brilliant red line." His Ukrainian arc: condemnation → anti-NATO frame → opposition to sanctions → opposition to arms → negotiation. The same pattern as Bardella, from the other French bank.

What the method compels us to acknowledge

Mélenchon has the widest international distribution of the French series: Syria (168 tweets), Mali (101), Karabakh (16), Afghanistan (24). His condemnation of Assad in 2013 and 2018 was clear. His five January 2026 tweets on Iran are genuine — the first real France-Spain divergence of the whole series. He is the most difficult profile to summarize in a single line.
