Following the U.S. and NATO withdrawal, the Taliban seized power on 15 August 2021. They systematically dismantled women's rights: banning girls from secondary and university education, barring women from most employment and public spaces. The UN Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan documented what the UN General Assembly described as "gender apartheid." Over 7 million people faced acute food insecurity by 2024. No UN member state has formally recognized the Taliban government.
