In August 2017, the Myanmar military launched a campaign of mass atrocity against the Rohingya Muslim minority in Rakhine State, following attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army. Over 700,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh in weeks. The UN Fact-Finding Mission concluded that Myanmar military commanders should be prosecuted for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. Over 10,000 were killed; reports documented mass rape and the burning of villages. The ICJ is hearing a genocide case brought by The Gambia.
